I am a Mum of two, and a few years ago, I took a break from the NHS to focus on the kids and slow the pace of life a little. I absolutely loved my job, colleagues and patients but I knew I wasn't going to have the chance to spend so much time with the smallies again. I added exercise to our daily routine, getting up and rolling out my mat first thing, with a combination of HIIT and Ashtanga or Vinyasa yoga. Before I knew it I had this new-found strength, balance and capability for stillness and peace. I had discovered how to use my breath to achieve focus and movement. I found myself making better decisions about my health like cutting down on alcohol, and being a more patient parent! As a physiotherapist I already had a good awareness of my body but the addition of a regular yoga practice, was so empowering and grounding. Recently I have preferred the more restorative forms of yoga, due to the strains of current life and recovery from Covid. The power of the body/mind connection impacts on my ability to cope with life's fluctuations, and I'm incredibly glad to have had this "power" over the past couple of years. The calmness, enrichment and gratitude felt after asana practice, pranayama or meditation is highly recommended! I hope the children will also find a love for yoga, to give them skills for navigating modern life, and the confidence to just be themselves.
There are parallels between physiotherapy and yoga. One strong theme is my specialism in Respiratory and the importance of the breath or Prana/life force. This is why I have called my business Breathe. I am very excited to start Breathe: Physiotherapy and Yoga to be able to use my experience and skills to improve your health and wellbeing.
My Physiotherapy Career
I have worked for the NHS since 2004. My core rotations provided me with skills in Medicine of the Elderly, Orthopaedics, Outpatients and Neurology. However, I specialised in Respiratory/Surgical in 2006. My senior roles gave me a deep understanding of surgical patients: General Surgery and Critical Care; Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiology; Renal and Transplant. Also of Respiratory Wards: Pulmonary Rehabilitation; COPD; CF; Bronchiectasis; lung cancer and pneumonias. In 2014 I became the Team Lead Clinical Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Cardiology which provided me with excellent experience in the surgical element of respiratory care and the development of an evolving service.
My NHS role is now an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner in Long Term Conditions in the East Lothian Community which is a wonderful environment to utilise my years of experience.
I am registered with The Health and Care Professions Council and
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists.
My Yoga Career
When I began yoga, I quickly realised its application to the client group I work with. Having a regular yoga practice is life changing but the benefits it can offer those who are living with or recovering from disease, chronic illness or surgery are remarkable.
I completed my 200 hours Yoga Teacher Training with The Classical Yoga School (Yoga Alliance registered). The teaching was based around Ashtanga which is an eight limbed system to guide your yogic journey including moral behaviours, postures, breath work and meditation. As well as improving my personal practice, the course gave me a deeper understanding of biomechanics, postures and their benefits, but also the ability to affect the emotional strength and wellbeing of my clients.
